Asian carp DNA found in Lake Erie

The battle against Asian carp has taken on a new front.

Evidence of the voracious, jumbo carp that have been advancing up the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal toward Lake Michigan shows the fish – or at least their DNA – have recently been detected in the Great Lakes, in Lake Erie.

Six water samples taken in August show the presence of silver and bighead carp in the shallowest – but most fish-friendly – of the five Great Lakes, said Chris Jerde of the University of Notre Dame. Continue reading

Biologists disagree over the threat Asian carp pose to the Great Lakes. Some believe the jumbo fish won’t thrive because the zebra and quagga mussels have already stripped from the lakes the plankton that the invasive fish depend upon.

But a new study released Thursday by the U.S. and Canadian governments says two species of Asian carp – bighead and silver – “pose a substantial risk to the Great Lakes if they become established.” Continue reading

NE Game and Parks Names McCoy Deputy Director

LINCOLN, Neb. – Tim McCoy has been selected as deputy director of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. McCoy, a native of Arapahoe, begins his new duties immediately.

McCoy, who came to the agency in 2002, has been administrator of the wildlife division since March 2011. He has a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and master’s degree and doctorate in fish and wildlife from the University of Missouri.
Scott Taylor, the wildlife division assistant administrator for research and analysis, has been named the interim wildlife division administrator.
