Wildlife Stressed Out

As I write this, it’s almost 60 degrees outside.  Its January 30th.  I live in Michigan.  This isn’t right.

No doubt, our warming climate is not only weird, but it poses’ a huge threat to the future of our fish and game up here in the Great Lakes and across the country. Continue reading

Milwaukee aldermen urge separation of Chicago River, Mississippi basin

The Milwaukee Common Council has had enough of the Chicago River and the threat it poses to all of the Great Lakes. The council passed a unanimous resolution Tuesday that calls for separating the Chicago River system from the Asian carp-infested Mississippi River basin, and the leader of a group representing the region’s mayors said he expects other Great Lakes cities to follow suit. This vast area — known as the prairie pothole region and extending from northwestern Iowa to Minnesota, the Dakotas, Montana and into Canada — provides the breeding habitat for roughly half of North America’s migratory waterfowl. Judge tosses Asian carp suit; states can amend it

A federal judge Monday threw out a lawsuit filed by five states that want barriers placed in Chicago-area waterways to prevent Asian carp from invading the Great Lakes, but said he would consider new arguments if the case were filed again.

Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio and Pennsylvania claimed that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Chicago’s Metropolitan Water Reclamation District are causing a public nuisance by failing to physically separate a network of rivers and canals from Lake Michigan. Continue reading

Noreen Walsh Named Regional Director

November 3, 2012

Denver, Colo. –The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe today announced the appointment of Noreen Walsh as the new Regional Director for the Service’s Mountain-Prairie Region. Walsh, a 22-year veteran of the Service, has served as Deputy Regional Director for the Region since December 2008.
